Media Analysis of XXX2 Sagar Metha 19th January 2010
In the opening scene, we appear to be on a farm, with farm buildings, fenced in fields with small group of horses and a man dressed in farmer’s clothes is walking towards the stable. The background noise is scary (non dig tic sound).
As the farmer walks forward he sees, sticking out of a pile of hay, a hand dripping with blood; (the close-up of the hand adds to the mystery and builds the tension for the audience) He then sees the head , also sticking out of the hay, with a bullet wound at the top of the head. It is the body of a middle aged man. This is still only less than a minute into the film (the music, a low percussion sound, becomes loader, meeting its crescendo as the close-up of the head appears on the screen), with this discover, the man, takes out a modern looking ‘walkie –talkie.
Suddenly, the camera cuts to a man, with mask and with red goggles’ on. The intruders have broken into a secret underground in NASA building by blowing up the farm patch by using high tech bombs. The buildings are under attacked; S. Jackson comes into the scene with a high tech camera following him. There are people shooting at each other and the lights are out. The music is loud and upbeat. S Jackson and his colleague are escaping in an advanced fast car heading towards somewhere creating tension for the audience. The two characters are talking about a hero and the editing takes it straight to a prison cell where we are introduced to the main character and they have a close up shot of the hero, this suggest the importance of the character, which saves time and makes the movie more thrilling. The credits are shown and then a flag of America, a military helicopter and fast cars suggesting the movie is going to be an action thriller.
Sixteen men had died in the shooting that took place in NASA building. We found out that S. Jackson had gone into high security prison to meet the prisoner who talks with attitude and S. Jackson knows about his capability and his innocence . This makes the audience curious about the character and wanting the audience to carry on the movie because of the suspense.
S. Jackson asked the prisoner to meet him at 12:05 outside the prison. There was a close up shot of the prisoner’s clock and is ticking towards 12 noon indicating the there is only a few minutes till impact, creating excitement for the audience as they know there is something about to happen.
The prisoner hits the security guard and steals the keys and escapes through the ventilator by kicking it. The camera shot also shows his muscles emphasising that he is the hero of the movie.
The prison officer tries to shoot him with a sniper but didn’t as he knew there is no way for the prisoner to escape, this creates dramatic irony as the audience know what is going to happen. The prisoner jumps from the top of the roof and lands on the rail of the helicopter, which was just there on time.
At this point, the audience would find it ironic as it was the opposite of what the security guard said. The prisoner says “you were late by one minute” which was like a joke through all of the action. To S Jackson, ironically he has found a hero which he calls his code name ‘XXX’. The prisoner does not like his name. The prisoner looks like a strong handsome African American. He has arrogance and no messing around attitude which makes the audience think that there will be a lot of action thriller, keeping them at the edge of their seats!!!
